By law, every trailer over a 2t maximum capacity must have electric brakes and any car towing over 2t must be fitted with an electric brake controller (EBC) - a brand such as Bendix, ElecBrakes or REDARC for example.

This is so that when you apply the brakes in the car, the electric brakes are applied on the trailer. Most hard-wired systems have a small dial third-party dial attached somewhere on the dashboard, which you can adjust from 1-10 to alter the sensitivity of the brakes - depending on how heavily loaded the trailer is.
