By law, every trailer over a 2t maximum capacity must have electric brakes and any car towing over 2t must be fitted with an electric brake controller (EBC) - a brand such as REDARC for example.
This is so that when you apply the brakes in the car, the electric brakes are applied on the trailer. Most hard-wired systems have a small dial third-party dial attached somewhere on the dashboard, which you can adjust from 1-10 to alter the sensitivity of the brakes - depending on how heavily loaded the trailer is.
